THINGS TO DO!
Captains Cottage is surrounded by stunning places to visit and our county boasts some of the UK's best beaches and coast line. However, if walking or beach bathing is not your thing, why not visit some of the many historic fishing harbours nearby. Cawsands, Looe, Polperro, Polruan, Fowey and Mevagissey are all very close and beautiful examples of Cornish fishing harbours at their best.
If you are visiting with children, why not pick up some crab bait and fishing nets and join the locals for a spot of 'crabbing' in Looe. The Monkey Sanctuary just outside Looe is great for a day out with the kids or if 'rock pooling' is a passion, why not check out the local marine life by visiting Seaton or Downderry at low tide. If you're are an avid diver, both Plymouth and Fowey have great dive centres and run organised excursions. Kayaking is also a favourite local past time and visitors can easily hire kayaks in Looe and Fowey if you fancy a paddle down the estuary. For surf schools, check out Whitsand Bay or for fishing take a look at Bake Lake coarse fishing or our own Loe Harbour for a spot of sea fishing. If you'd like to experience first hand some of the local wildlife, why not book a trip on the glass bottom boats from Looe and see if you can spot any dolphins or seals. Gweek seal sanctuary is also a must visit or Screech Owl Sanctuary. The Eden Project is approximately 30 minutes away and the Sky zip-wire experience is awesome! Kart-World is just 10 minutes away or if you fancy something calmer like a spot of retail therapy, Plymouth Hoe, The Barbican and Royal William Yard are great days out or Truro is just a short drive away. To soak up some culture, Plymouth theatre or the Minnack are perfect.
If you are looking for great walks with your pooch and the family, why not try the local walk from the cottage through Keveral Woods down to Seaton Sands. There's the Seaton to Downderry beach walk, Hessenford to Seaton walk along the fresh water stream from the local pub, our beautiful South West Coastal Path which can be picked up at Seaton or Looe. There's the stunning golden sands of Portwrinkle and Tregantle Beach, Whitsand Bay and the Rame peninsula. The Talland to Polperro, Lansallos to Polruan all offer spectacular views. What about nearby Cardinham Woods, Bodmin Moor or Mount Edgcumbe Country Park and Grade I listed estate covering some 865 acres of gardens, beach and woodland on the Rame Peninsula. All are fantastic days out.
If its a trip to the North coast of Cornwall you are after, then the quaint fishing towns of Padstow or Port Issac are only 40 minutes or St Ives in the South is approximately 1 hour 10 minutes drive. Beautiful South Devon is only 50 minutes away, and we can thoroughly recommend a trip to Totnes for a spot of boutique shopping or a trip to Dartmouth or Salcombe.
Whatever your preference, the Cottage is ideally situated for visiting some of Cornwall and South Devon's major attractions; and the warmer, sunny climate and azure, calm waters of the South coast makes it a great location to visit any time of year!
